| It's funny... |
...how one little thing in life can change your whole perspective of something.
Amy.c would probably know exactly how this feels since some recent event, which i wont say what, has revealed a side in her that i didn't think was even possible...defying her mother's advice! haha
I was meaning to post this article from the SMH (03/05/06). Basically this woman had consultations with Sigmund Freud and this is what the article says:
She told Freud how when she and her father were at the cinema, he would insist on leaving when a kissing scene started. "He would tell me, 'such a thing is not for you'," she said.
Freud told her: "Being an adult entails overcoming the difficulties and implementations of that which forms a personality. Fostering your desires. Putting up resistance. Asking why and not silently accepting everything. It is about standing up for that which is really important, with quiet determination.
"When the next kiss scene comes up in the cinema; stay seated, stay seated. I'm telling you explicitly, stay seated. Think of me."
Miss Walter did defy her father on their next cinema visit. Gradually she gained the confidence to detach herself from his rule and eventually pursue her own career, becoming a sculptor.
"He saved my life," she said.

Moral of the story: Just because your mother/father (or anyone for that matter) says one thing, does not mean you can't have your own beliefs. Don't live your life to other people's standards...do what YOU want to do because in the end, it is YOU that has to live the life you have chosen to create/follow.

wow, thats the first intelligent thing I've seen Freud say!
But yeah i figured that heaps long ago... trying to live up to my mums beliefs/expectations was just depressing... her beliefs are pretty fucked up though, so you know, it became obvious at an early age that parents can be wrong!
At the same time her beliefs still influence me waaaayy more than i want them too, but at least im aware of it so i can do something about it

I gotta agree with Anonymous that it's probably the first intelligent thing that I've seen Freud say. Most of his theories and ideas were total crap. =p

actually wen kids get their own ideas, that are reasonable and backed up with logic and thoughtfulness, parents actually do see the light and gain respect for their kids..
